Spring has nearly sprung, which means it’s time to kick off the Rockport Public Library’s Spring Horticulture Talks, in partnership with Merryspring Nature Center. The first presentation entitled, “My Favorite Vegetables: Growing Gourmet,” will take place on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 1 p.m. in the library’s lower level. All programs in this series, held monthly from March through June, are free and open to the public. From 1998 to 2020, John and Kathy Fromer grew gourmet vegetables for fine restaurants, caterers, B&B’s, and markets. Selected for their taste and unique colors, these vegetables were still warm from the garden when delivered. Varieties were chosen to thrive in midcoast Maine and provide bountiful harvests from a one-acre garden. Because they did not travel from afar, the produce had excellent shelf life and maintained their flavor and nutritional value. John Fromer will discuss these selections and provide tips on how to grow them. Most are only available to grow from seed due to their uniqueness. Fortunately, gourmet vegetables are no harder to grow than standard varieties! John Fromer is a Maine Master Gardener Volunteer and the Program Director at Merryspring Nature Center, a 66-acre sanctuary in Camden and Rockport dedicated to preserving the natural... |

The Rockport Public Library announces a new series of programs to be held throughout 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The first presentation in the series, “Researching Your Revolutionary War Ancestors,” will be given by Helen Shaw on Wednesday, Mar. 18, at 1 p.m. in the library’s lower level. While many of the tools and resources discussed are widely applicable to general genealogical research projects, Shaw’s talk will primarily focus on finding ancestors who would have been living in Maine during the second half of the 18th century. She will also be providing added context with an overview of what life would have been like for people living in Maine and the midcoast area during this complicated and war-torn time. Helen A. Shaw, CG®, has been researching her family’s history for over fifty years and has been a certified genealogist since 2010. She is past president of the Maine Genealogical Society and presently is the chair of the Maine State Cemetery Preservation Commission. Shaw is past regent and registrar of the Lady Knox Chapter, NSDAR, and past registrar and parliamentarian of the Maine State Organization DAR. She is a member of several... |

Clinical Herbalist Pat Harpell will lead a workshop at the Rockport Public Library, teaching participants how to create their own personal care products. This free class, on Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m., is part of the Library’s “Let’s Feel Better in 2026” series. Harpell emphasizes that personal care products are simple to make and free from the chemicals found in most store-bought products. During the workshop, participants will learn to make an all-natural lotion and facial cleanser using ingredients that are safe enough to consume. Attendees will take home their creations and receive instructions for making lip balm, shampoo, hair rinse, and more. Harpell’s interest in skin care products originated from her research as a clinical herbalist. She encountered persistent, chronic conditions that resisted treatment from both modern and alternative medicine. This experience led her to advocate that the ingredients applied to the skin are just as important to consider as those put into the body. Harpell encourages participants to embrace this knowledge and host personal care product-making parties at home. The 90-min. program has a limited capacity of 16 participants. Interested individuals can register by calling the Rockport Library at 207-236-3642. |
