A dark night sky is about more than just beautiful views—it’s essential for wildlife, human health, and our sense of wonder! Because of Maine’s vast swaths of uninhabited forestland, the state has some of the darkest, clearest night skies east of the Mississippi River. The AMC Maine Woods International Dark Sky Park is the first and only International Dark Sky Park in New England. In this talk, astronomers John Meader and Shawn Laatsch, along with Maine Master Naturalist Serena Sanborn, will explain why dark skies matter and precisely what people can do to make a difference where they live. This program is presented in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), Maine Chapter.ABOUT THE PRESENTERSSerena Sanborn is a Maine Master Naturalist and arts educator for Waterville Creates. As a science communicator, she leads trail walks, volunteers with Dark Sky Maine and Stars Over Katahdin, and attends the Appalachian Mountain Club’s week-long See the Dark Festival. She ardently advocates for Maine’s nocturnal wildlife. Shawn Laatsch, director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center and Jordan Planetarium at the University of Maine, has presented over 10,000 shows and lectured globally since starting his career in 1984. The Rockport Conservation Commission welcomes Professor Thomas Bateman to the Rockport Public Library for a presentation titled “Stress and Effective Coping as Our Climate Changes.” The talk will take place in the library’s lower level on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. Bateman notes that—with regard to climate change—scientific causes, disasters, and technical solutions receive the bulk of public attention and coverage. “We need to attend more, and better, to ourselves,” asserts Bateman. “This includes climate stress and coping strategies, which can strengthen both personal and community resilience.” The program will explore customizing pro-climate actions in ways that 1) aren’t too costly, 2) suit personal interests and skills, 3) are satisfyingly impactful, and 4) contribute to needed system changes. This talk will not be about personal carbon footprints. Thomas S. Bateman, D.B.A. is the Bank of America Professor Emeritus of Commerce at UVA McIntire School of Commerce. Bateman specializes in organizational behavior and strategic leadership. He conducts research on proactive behavior, problem solving, and job stress in organizational contexts and as behavioral challenges in the domain of climate change. Halloween through New Year’s Day seems to mark the "Season of Indulgent Eating” for most Americans. However, your digestion can feel wonky at any time of the year. Join clinical herbalist Mo Katz-Christy at the Rockport Public Library for a 90-min. program about herbs that can help to regulate, nourish, and heal your digestive system. Did you know that our gut sends more messages to our brain than our brain sends to our gut? Or that the liver can regulate our hormones? Or that most of our immune system is in our gut? Whenever our body is dysregulated, the gut is likely to play a role in healing. Katz-Christy will discuss how our bodies evolved with plants and how we can work with them to regulate our gut, and in doing so, our whole bodies. Mo Katz-Christy (they/them) graduated from a three-year clinical herbalism program at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism in 2022. They are a community education and also work one-on-one with clients to address root imbalances that cause dysregulation and to promote long-term healing.
