Valerie Neal, emerita curator in the Department of Space History at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, will present her new book at the Rockport Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. On a Mission: The Smithsonian History of US Women Astronauts spans 45 years and 61 astronauts to share the epic journeys of women who made space for themselves in a male-dominated field. Neal’s talk will provide a culturally insightful history of the experiences of women astronauts, the challenges they've faced, and their distinctive stories. Her studies offer a sweeping look at the earliest women astronauts to Christina Hammock Koch, assigned to the first crewed Artemis mission around the Moon in 2026. The program, sponsored by the Rockport Library Foundation, is free and open to the public. Seating will be limited to 75 people, first come, first served. Join the fun, music, and movement as The Music Together® visits the Rockport Public Library! The Music Together® at Midcoast Music Academy class is for ages 0 through 5 with caregiver(s). The class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children in a natural, family-style learning. Each child participates at their own level. Any caregivers (parents, grandparents, nanny)can bring the children. Music Together® is 45-minute early childhood music and movement for families. This class is free. Open to all families. There is no registration for this class, but we encourage families to come early as space is limited. We will be learning shapes, colors, numbers, and moving our bodies. Ideal for ages 2-3

The Rockport Public Library will host their first Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. The presentation by Trevor Paul will be an account of the years he spent living and working in Tianjin, China, experiencing the country’s private and public education systems firsthand. Paul will discuss the realities and misconceptions around Chinese education. He will also explore recent changes in education policies and structures, as well as what those moves might suggest about the country’s views of the future. Trevor Paul is an English and history teacher at Camden Hills Regional High School, where he also coaches ice hockey. As a side passion, he writes fantasy novels and short stories. In addition to China, he has also lived in Germany and worked for Hebron Academy for nearly a decade before moving to the midcoast with his wife and son.
