The Rockport Conservation Commission (RCC) will host a presentation at the Rockport Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m. to review the latest information about the presence of the emerald ash borer in the area. RCC member Georgia Urso will discuss the recent Geographic Information System (GIS) survey that looked at Rockport municipal ash trees, recognizing specimen ash trees that are of high priority to preserve. The program will also cover: identifying ash trees and the importance of ashes in communities; what the emerald ash borer (EAB) is, how it got here, impacts on infested areas, and where it has spread to in Maine so far. Urso will also explain solutions and how the public can get involved, as well as answer audience questions. Georgia Urso recently graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. in Botany and a minor in Legal Studies. She worked as an AmeriCorps crew member from 2016-17 in Flagstaff, AZ, where she participated in multiple ecological restoration and invasive species removal projects. She also completed an internship at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2024, which focused on their eastern hemlock preservation project. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m., the Rockport Public Library will host a program called “Working Forests, Thriving Communities” — the second talk in the library’s fall series in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). Carolyn Ziegra, AMC’s Forest Manager, and Chelsea Daniels, AMC’s Community Relations Manager, will venture to the midcoast from Greenville, Maine to share the story of the working forestlands in the heart of the state. They will discuss how sustainably managed private forests support healthy ecosystems and local communities through forestry, recreation, and conservation. They will also explore endeavors to balance provisions for people and nature, and discuss ways that the public can further connect with the land. 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the Appalachian Mountain Club. The Maine chapter of the AMC is dedicated to fostering the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of Maine’s mountains, forests, paths, and trails. Learn more at amcmaine.org and outdoors.org. |

The Rockport Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Wednesday, October 21, at 6 p.m. Stephen Harder, Vice-President of the Camden Conference, will discuss the special history and status of Taiwan, its importance in US China relations, and the possible shape of a crisis with global implications. Stephen, a Rockport resident, has lived and studied in Taiwan and practiced international law in Europe and China for 30 years. He recently retired as professor of practice of law at NYU in Shanghai.
