SUMMARY:Author Event with Barbara Kent Lawrence for "Both Sides of the Pond"
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, Nov. 5\, at 6 p.m.\, the Rockport Public Library will host Maine author Barbara Kent Lawrence for an event introducing her new book\, Both Sides of the Pond — My Family’s War: 1933 – 1946. The presentation will incorporate artifacts and highlight the author’s “Ah-ha” moments while conducting background research. \n\n\n\nThe book tells the story of Lawrence’s mother Barbara Greene\, a young British actress who met Joe Kennedy\, Jr. (son of the American Ambassador) in January of 1939. Their relationship would lead to her emigrating to the United States and learning to pilot a plane. The book also cover the experiences of Lawrence’s uncle Kent (Barbara Green’s brother)\, his bitter retreat from Dunkirk when he left England in January 1940 to fight in France\, and his subsequent service on the frontlines in Cornwall\, North Africa\, Sicily\, and Burma. \n\n\n\nEvan Thomas\, author of two New York Times best-selling books\, including Road to Surrender states\, “Barbara Lawrence has given us an intimate\, harrowing\, and vivid portrait of two young people engulfed by a world war . . . For anyone who wants to know what it is really like to have your world turned upside down\, read this book and be shocked\, thrilled\, and moved.” \n\n\n\nBarbara Kent Lawrence earned a BA in anthropology from Bennington College\, an MA in sociology from New York University\, and an EdD from Boston University. She taught anthropology and history in a boys’ high school\, then cofounded and ran a real-estate and construction firm in Northeast Harbor\, Maine. After receiving her EdD.\, she taught writing and education courses at Northeastern and Lesley universities in Boston. Both Sides of the Pond is Lawrence’s ninth book.

SUMMARY:Maine Fibershed Festival Day!
DESCRIPTION:The Rockport Public Library will host the Maine Fibershed Festival from October 3 – 30 — a month-long exhibit complimented by special events focused on how Maine’s Soil-to-Soil fiber system weaves together a strong\, stable\, and connected community. \n\n\n\nA Fibershed is a geographical region where natural fiber is produced\, processed\, made into textiles\, and ultimately composted. The exhibit and the events will highlight how Maine’s network of local\, natural fiber producers\, dyers\, processors\, and artisans are working together to create a healthier environment\, income equality\, and a strong fiber community. \n\n\n\nOn Friday\, Oct. 3\, at 1 p.m.\, Earth Loom creator Susan Barrett Merrill and historical storyteller Cathi Belcher invite the public to attend the warping of an Earth Loom in the library’s lower level. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS EVENT. \n\n\n\nMaine Fibershed’s Festival Day will take place on Saturday\, Oct. 25\, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the upper and lower levels of the Rockport Library. Fiber enthusiasts of all ages can check out live demonstrations and meet farmers\, mill owners\, dyers\, spinners\, weavers\, makers\, menders and natural fiber composters. We will even have THREE LIVE JACOB SHEEP in the park directly across from the library’s entrance\, courtesy of The Farm on Empire!!! \n\n\n\nFollowing the demonstrations\, Dr. Alison King of the University of Maine’s School of Food and Agriculture will give the keynote presentation at 12:30 p.m. in the library’s lower level. She will discuss the rise of the modern fiber industry and its consequences for our bodies\, waterways\, and soils\, while highlighting circular alternatives: the return of diverse fiber crops\, turning waste wool into pellets for fertilizer and mulch\, and developing natural landscape fabrics. \n\n\n\nMore information about Maine Fibershed can be found at mainefibershed.com. Additional information about the month-long exhibit can be found at rockportlibrary.net. \n\n\n\nMaine Fibershed and the Rockport Public Library would like to thank Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District for their generous sponsorship of the festival. \n\n\n\nExhibits for You to Discover \n\n\n\n\nThe Creative Genius of Melissa Majkut. Melissa\, who passed away last year\, was the leading light of the Maine Fibershed. Her estate has graciously let us exhibit some of her items that have never been seen as well as those beloved by all.\n\n\n\nWeaving a Life*\n\n\n\nMidcoast Weavers*\n\n\n\nMidcoast and Whitefield Spinners\, part of the Maine Spinners’ Registry*\n\n\n\n2nFrom\n\n\n\nBelfast Fiber Arts\n\n\n\nCape Newagen Farm*\n\n\n\nCider Hill Farm\n\n\n\nThe Farm on Empire*\n\n\n\nFuture and Past Craft Exchange\n\n\n\nGoldenrod Textiles\n\n\n\nHawthorn & Thistle Farmstead\n\n\n\nIngendahl Acres\n\n\n\nJoelsa Farm Fiber\n\n\n\nJunction Garden\n\n\n\nMeander Made\n\n\n\nMoorit Hill Farm and Fiber\n\n\n\nSassafras Mending*\n\n\n\nSeacolors Yarnery\n\n\n\nStone Coast Weaving School*\n\n\n\nVersicolor*\n\n\n\n\n*These members will also be doing demos during our October 25 Festival.

SUMMARY:Conservation in Our Community: Celebrating CMLT
DESCRIPTION:The next program in the Rockport Public Library’s series in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club\, Maine Chapter\, will take place on Wednesday\, Oct. 22\, at 6 p.m. The program entitled “Conservation in Our Community” will highlight nearly 40 years of conservation work by the Coastal Mountains Land Trust (CMLT). The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nCMLT Board President Jeff Davis and Senior Stewardship and Land Protection Manager Jack Shaida will share details on the work CMLT does across 16 towns\, from Rockport to Prospect\, and how conservation can be beneficial to communities in different ways. They’ll touch on land protection\, stewardship\, sustainability\, and their Learning Landscapes Program\, while answering overarching questions like: “What is a Land Trust?” and “How Do Conservation Easements Work?” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenters: \n\n\n\nJeff Davis\, Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s 15th Board President\, has been involved with the Land Trust for over a decade\, initially serving as a stewardship volunteer. Jeff spent his career in marketing and advertising\, serving as a partner and director at Sandelman & Associates for 25 years and President for 10 years. After more than 20 years of enjoying summers in the Midcoast\, Jeff and his wife\, Theresa\, retired full-time to Camden. His hobbies include kayaking\, hiking\, fishing\, mountain biking\, gardening and being a member of Uke’s Rock\, a ukulele group based in Rockland. He appreciates the efforts of the Land Trust and the impact projects like the Round the Mountain Trail can have on the community. \n\n\n\nJack Shaida\, Senior Stewardship and Land Protection Manager\, graduated from College of the Atlantic in 2018 with a Bachelor’s of Art in Human Ecology\, and joined the Land Trust soon after as a seasonal steward. He’s been with the Land Trust ever since in a variety of roles. Project highlights are designing the Land Trust’s 2020 conservation plan\, managing the Land Trust’s preserves and trails in Waldo County\, and creating the Mount Tuck Preserve and Trail in Stockton Springs. Jack and his partner Lisa recently moved to Camden\, where they enjoy gardening\, walking their dog\, hiking\, swimming\, and paddling on the Land Trust (and other conserved areas) throughout the region.
