    Researching Your Revolutionary War Ancestors

    The Rockport Public Library announces a new series of programs to be held throughout 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The first presentation in the series, “Researching Your Revolutionary War Ancestors,” will be given by Helen Shaw on Wednesday, Mar. 18, at 1 p.m. in the library’s lower level.  While many of the tools and resources discussed are widely applicable to general genealogical research projects, Shaw’s talk will primarily focus on finding ancestors who would have been living in Maine during the second half of the 18th century. She will also be providing added context with an overview of what life would have been like for people living in Maine and the midcoast area during this complicated and war-torn time. Helen A. Shaw, CG®, has been researching her family’s history for over fifty years and has been a certified genealogist since 2010. She is past president of the Maine Genealogical Society and presently is the chair of the Maine State Cemetery Preservation Commission.     Mahjong or mah-jongg (English pronunciation: mah-JONG) is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations). This group meets on Fridays, at 10:00 AM for approximately 90-120 minutes.

    Spring Book Sale

    Like the daffodils and tulips, the first Friends of the Rockport Public Library Book Sale of the year is a beloved harbinger of spring. This year’s event will be held in the Rockport Library’s lower level on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As always, tables will be filled with extraordinary deals on thousands of books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, and audiobooks. Planning to buy a lot? Join the Friends of the Rockport Public Library for $20 and receive a purple tote to fill up with books at no additional charge. Refill the tote at book sales in June and September for only $10. If you already bought your tote in December, don’t forget to bring it back for your $10 refill. The Friends will have an especially large selection of puzzles, DVDs, and audiobooks at this sale, thanks to generous donations. Spring is also a great time to stock up on gardening books and crafting books (graduation and wedding season is just around the corner — time to make something special).  All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Rockport Public Library.
